Austria’s wines are highly acclaimed both by wine experts and by wine lovers all around the world. As artisanal products crafted by winemakers with a special link to their land, they consistently demonstrate their potential at international blind tastings.
Over recent years, the great potential of Austrian grape varieties has become ever more apparent and Grüner Veltliner is pre-eminent amongst these. After 2018’s earliest harvest in recorded history, picking in 2019 commenced at the customary time. And, the good weather which greeted the harvesters was particularly gratifying since all the grapes could be brought in according to plan without any element of stress.
The warm vegetation cycle with its dry spells brought excellent ripeness to the clusters, along with average volume, while the cool autumn nights imparted excellent fruit and good acid backbone to the grape material.
Johann Joseph Wenzel Anton Franz Karl Radetzky von Radetz (1766-1858) known simply as “Graf Josef” to his friends, was the most celebrated military figure of the Habsburg Monarchy. He was immortalised by Johann Strauss in his world famous “Radetzky March”.
Graf Josef wines supports the St. Vincent de Paul Society, donating profits to help the charity with its work to help the homeless in the cities of the UK and Ireland.
